How to Backup Files
If you work with computers, you will hear, “always back up your files.” Usually most of us have to learn the hard way how important this is. After working on a project for hours, something happens, and you loose your project, your brain remembers “ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR FILES!”

The next thought is, how do I do this so it will never happen again? One way is to store the folder or file on your internal disk and write it to a CD. See the article “How to Burn a CD.” This protects you just in case your internal drive fails, which happens, on rare occasions. You probably will not do this on every file you save, but you should use your own judgment on this. I usually store the file on my internal disk and every few hours I use my back up program to store it.

If you are using Windows XP Home Edition you will discover that Microsoft did not install the backup program. So we have to do a little work to install it. You can look to see if you have it installed by going to start, All Programs, accessories, system tools. If you do not see Backup, here is the procedure to install it.

Windows backup program is on your XP installation disk, although it isn't installed by default. To install the backup program, put the installation disc into your CD-ROM drive and open it in Windows Explorer. Navigate to \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. In the NTBACKUP folder, double-click “ntbackup.msi” to install the program. Once you install the backup program, it will appear in Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

Chances are pretty good that you will not have the XP installation disk! Why? Because most computer vendors only ship an OEM [Original Equipment Manafacturers] disk with their product. This causes much confusion and angry comments from computer users. So, I would like to give you a little tip. Go to the Google Search Engine and type in the name of the file you need and the odds are very good you will find it. Fig1 is an example showing where you can find the file ntbackup.msi. Google is located at http://www.google.com. You may want to wait until we go over some of the basics on the internet before installing the backup program.

After you install the backup program you can go to start all Programs, Accessories, System Tools and double click on the backup icon. A wizard will open, see fig 12.

You will need to navigate to the folder that you wish to back up and fill in some other data. When it is finished it will open a window as shown in fig 13.

          When the backup is finished you can click report to see what happened or close to close the window.

               How To Cut, Copy and Paste
Being able to open more than one window and using the Cut, Copy and Paste feature is really one of the more useful parts of Windows. The best way to demonstrate is to use it to move or copy text or an image from one window to another.

Looking at the reduced Word for Windows Document1 and Document2 (Fig 14) shows the sentence “copy me” highlighted in window 1. I then left clicked on Edit, then Copy. Next I went to went to window 2 and put my blinking curser where I wanted the beginning of the sentence to start and clicked Edit Paste. That is how simple it is. Here is what happened when you went to Edit and clicked on Copy. It took the sentence you had highlighted and placed it into a temporary file called “clip board”. When you clicked on Paste it took a copy of the file in the clipboard and pasted it wherever your curser was setting. If you remember the section, How To Copy Folders and Files, we used this same method except we held down the control key and at the same time pushed down on the ca” key (this is the same thing as pushing the Copy under Edit.) Pushing control and then “V” is the same as pushing Paste under the Edit key. As I mentioned before there is usually more than one way of doing things, which can lead to confusion when you are learning the computer.

Keep in mind the sentence we copied could just as well have been a paragraph or a page or a picture. It will place anything you have highlighted in the clipboard. If you wanted to move the item from one window to the other you simply use Cut rather than Copy under the Edit key.
